  • Description

Less than two years after the Turkish Government banned the cultivation of opium poppies, the farmers re preparing to sow a new poppy crop.

Turkey has long been recognised as the major source of heroin which finds its way to the western world.

Under pressure from the United States the Turkish Government just under two years ago banned opium poppies, though the flow to America continued. The United States made money available to farmers in Turkey to compensate them for the loss of revenue. However it seems this has had little effect.

Two men have been arrested in Turkey and charged with producing heroin from opium. Police kept a watch on their house for two months and swooped .... but the two men were not at home. They were later arrested and charged with producing heroin ... if found guilty they face the death penalty. The value of heroin found in the house was about 80 thousand dollars (approx. 35,000 pounds sterling).

The capture is the latest event in political manoeuvering which has lasted more than five years. American Secretary of State Henry Kissinger has even been involved ... he has tried to persuade the Turkish Government to continue the ban on opium poppy cultivation, but has received no clear assurance.
