West Germany won first and second place in the World Two-Man Bobsleigh Championship at St. Moritz in Switzerland on Sunday (January 20).
Wolfgang Zimmerer and Peter Utzechneider -- the West German Number One team -- won the championship for the third successive year.
They clocked an average time of 5 minutes 10.25 seconds in four runs down the 1,620 metre (just over one mile) track. In the third run, they clocked the fastest time of the season -- 1 minute 16.7 seconds.
The West German Number Two team -- George Heibel and Fritz Ohlwaerter -- came in second with a time of 5 minutes 12.6 seconds.
Third was the Swiss team -- Fritz Luedi and Karl Haesali, with a time of 5 minutes 13.69 seconds.
The Canadians Hans Gehrig and Christopher Hicks crashed over the track embankment on their lat run and finished eighteenth.
