  • Description

Canadian Steve Baker riding a Yamaha, was officially confirmed as winner of the Venezuelan 200-mile (330 km) 750 cc motorcycle race on Monday (22 March), the day after the race was run.

The organisers first named American Gary Nixon as winner and presented him with his $14,000 (GBP7,000 sterling) prize. But they then discovered they had overlooked a pit stop made by Nixon and had credited him with an extra lap.

Nixon was placed second on his Kawasaki, with John Newbold of Britain who rode a Suzuki, third.

Race organisers produced the final placings mid-morning on Monday for the race which was run in two stages on Sunday (21 March). It was the second event of the 1976 International Motor-cycling Federation (FIM) 750 cc series calender.

Nineteen-year-old Venezuelan, Johnny Cecotto was favourite to win the race after his triumph in the first event of the season, at Daytona in the United States earlier this month. He dropped out suffering from exhaustion with only eight laps to go in the second stage. He had won the first stage, ahead of Nixon.

It was also an unhappy race for other top riders. Britain's Barry Sheene skidded off the track on the 17th lap of the first leg when his Suzuki seized.

Hideo Kanyaya riding a Yamaha crashed on the 18th lap of the first stage and Frenchman Patrick Pons, in third place with one lap to go in the first leg, skidded and crashed, breaking his leg.

The race was run in two staged, with the winner having the best over-all performance in the two races. Baker won the second stage and was third in the first.
