  • Description

The French liner Antilles, which struck a reef and caught fire in the Caribbean yesterday, was reported to be still blazing tonight, Saturday, 9th January. All 650 people on board are said to be safe. Most of them were taken off in launches from the Queen Elizabeth II.

The Antilles, the second biggest French liner afloat--only the France is bigger--had been completely refitted at Le Havre in preparation for her Caribbean cruise. Her engines were overhauled and all the saloons and cabins decorated. She left La Guaira, the port for Caracas, on Thursday, bound for Barbados where she was due today, Saturday. Yesterday she struck a reef off the small island of Mustique, tore open her hull and caught fire. The owners in Le Havre described her loss as a catastrophe.
