Background: Switzerland's highest cable railway, connecting the Gornergret at 10,269 ft with the Stockhorn at 11,594 ft above sea level, was filmed in operation by Visnews, Dec 10.
Started in May 1955 and completed in October this year, the lofty cable railway which can carry up to 190 people every hour in one direction adds a new and important attraction to the many tourist facilities of the famous winter sport and health resort of Zermatt.
One carriage with a passenger capacity of 40 operates on each of the two sections - intermediate stop Hohselligrat - which cover an overall distance of 9,600 feet.
After a ride of no more than 11 minutes through the sparkling winter landscape with the magnificent backcloth of the solitary, towering Matterhorn the passengers have snoweled mountain world at their feet.
For the more adventurous skiers there is the perfect opportunity of going further on to the higher snowfields of the upper Findelen and Gorner; and Monte Rosa is waiting for enterprising mountaineers who can now accomplish the ascent in a day.
