  • Description

One man is missing after two explosions ripped through a tanker off the coast of western Japan on Wednesday (2 November).

SYNOPSIS: The tanker is the Japanese owned Matsushima Maru Number Three. The explosions tore a gaping hole near the bow of the vessel and it began spilling oil.

No cause have yet been given for the explosions, and the fire was brought under control by two fire-fighting boats. The 46,000 ton tanker was empty at the time of the blasts and it developed a heavy list. The incident happened about 60 miles (80 Kilometres) south of Kochi.

Japanese authorities immediately launched a rescue mission. All but one of the crew had been able to climb aboard life boats. Helicopters and rescue boats picked them up while a search continued for the missing crew member.
