Background: Ascot race course near London became a parading ground for high women's fashions on Thursday (20 June) -- Ladies' Day of Royal Ascot week, the premier social event on the British horseracing calendar.
In heat-wave conditions, racegoers were treated to a range of bizarre fashions -- some more revealing then others.
The American actress, and star of the film Deep Throat, Linda Lovelace, kept the cameras clicking with a man's suit, a top hat and cane, and no shirt or brassiere.
Two days earlier at the opening of the fashionable meeting, she disconcerted officials when she arrived in a long black outfit with a see-through top. The next day she turned up in see-through lace.
Her major rival for attention was Mrs. Gertrude Shilling, who has earned a reputation for her large elaborate hats. Her choice this year was an enormous orange feathered hat.
Most of the men stuck to top hats and tails or brokers' suits, and there was little sign of the fashionable "Gatsby" look.
