QUEEN ELIZABETH'S VISIT TO HAMBURG BEGAN THIS MORNING WITH A DRIVE THROUGH THE STREETS THAT COULD ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS TRIUMPHANT. WITH THE WORDS "WE WANT ELIZABETH" RINGING ROUND THE SQUARE OUTSIDE THE TOWN HALL, SHE ARRIVED FOR LUNCH AS GUEST OF THE SENATE. DR. NEVERMANN, THE BURGOMASTER, CAME TO THE FOOT OF THE STATELY BUILDING TO GREET THE QUEEN - A UNIQUE BREAK WITH TRADITION, NEVER BEFORE ACCORDED TO A GERMAN EMPEROR OR FOREIGN POTENTATE.

AT THE LUNCH THE QUEEN TOLD THE SENATORS: "IT IS PARTICULARLY APPROPRIATE THAT WE, COMING FROM A MARITIME NATION, SHOULD LEAVE GERMANY BY SEA THROUGH THIS GREAT PORT, AND DOWN THE RIVER WHICH IS THE FOUNDATION OF HAMBURG'S PROSPERITY, AND ITS GATEWAY TO THE WORLD."
THE MORNING HAD A NAUTICAL FLAVOUR WHEN THE QUEEN WAS TAKEN OUT IN A LUNCH ON TO THE OUTER ALSTER, THE GREAT LAKE AT THE HEART OF THE CITY, TO WATCH A REGATTA. IT WAS HELD IN IDEAL CONDITIONS, WITH A SHARP BREEZE FILLING THE WHITE SAILS. THE QUEEN HANDED TO THE WINNER THE "QUEEN ELIZABETH CUP" OF STERLING ENGLISH SILVER.

AT THE SAME TIME, THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH VISITED THE COMMAND AND STAFF ACADEMY OF THE BUNDESWEHR AT BLANKENESE, JUST OUTSIDE HAMBURG. HE WAS RECEIVED BY THE COMMANDANT, MAJOR-GENERAL BENNECKE, AND ATTENDED A NAVAL OPERATIONS BRIEFING EXERCISE BY STUDENTS CONCERNED WITH DEFENCE BY NATO FORCES.

THE QUEEN AND DUKE TOURED THE HARBOUR OF HAMBURG, WHERE ALL SHIPS WERE DRESSED OVERALL AND SIRENS SOUNDED IN THEIR HONOUR AS THE ROYAL LAUNCH PROGRESSED. THEY ENDED AT THE OVERSEAS PIER WHERE THE ROYAL YACHT "BRITANNIA" HAD BEEN MOORED FOR SEVERAL DAYS.

BEFORE SAILING FOR HOME, THE QUEEN HELD A DINNER ON BOARD THE "BRITANNIA". IN A FINAL TOAST SHE CALLED ON PRESIDENT LUEBKE AND OTHER WEST GERMAN LEADERS TO DRINK "TO THE INCREASE OF THESE FRIENDLY AND PROFITABLE CONTACTS BETWEEN US AND BETWEEN ALL NATIONS." SHE EXPRESSED APPRECIATIONS AND GRATITUDE FOR WEST GERMANY'S "OVERWHELMING WELCOME."
