  • Description

In Saigon, two disside???s, one a woman, were killed and five others arrested as security forces crushed an armed rebellion after a nightlong siege outside a Catholic church on Friday (13 February).

A press conference held at the former allied forces headquarters on Sunday (15 February) announced that one security officer was killed in the clash on Friday morning at the Vinh Son Catholic Church which had been turned into a rebel stronghold.

The statement, the first word of a rebellion since the revolutionary government took power last year, was announced by the Saigon National Liberation Front and the People's Revolutionary Committee.

Saigon security officer Mr. Nguyen Van Danh said, "The American Central Intelligence Agency is involved in this political plot to sabotage the security of our people and our country."
"What is particularly serious is that the dissidents used the Vinh Son Church as a fortress for their operations and the parish priest, Father Nguyen Quang Minh, is one of the arrested leaders," he said.

When reporters were shown round the church, they found it deserted with spent cartridges strewn over the floor. They also found leaflets, pistols, radio transmitting equipments and printing machinery to forge banknotes and fake Vietnamese national bills.

One of those killed was a woman who studied printing in Japan for three years while the other was a paratroop sergeant during the former Thieu regime.

The plotters will be tried in court after investigations are completed.
