The guided missile frigate U.S.S. Leahy and the guided missile destroyer U.S.S. Tattnall sailed into?

  • Description

The guided missile frigate U.S.S. Leahy and the guided missile destroyer U.S.S. Tattnall sailed into Leningrad on Monday (12 May) on the first visit by United States warships to a Soviet port since the second World War.

Later on Monday, two Soviet Navy destroyers arrived in Boston, to complete the exchange, which was linked with the celebrations of the thirtieth anniversary of the Allied defeat of Nazi Germany.

The two American ships exchanged a 21-gun salute with the historic naval base on Kronstadt Island in the Gulf of Finland and berthed about two-and-a-half hours later.

The idea for the exchange visits started about three years ago, along with talks between the two navies about avoiding incidents at see as ships shadowed each other.

This year, the Soviet Union suggested linking the exchange visits with the 30th anniversary celebrations, which have dominated life in the U.S.S.R. in recent months.

The United States and the Soviet Union will meet in Washington on 19 May to discuss further steps to implement their 1972 agreement to avoid incidents between their ships at sea.
