  • Description

THE ISRAELI PROJECT OF DIVERTING WATERS OF THE JORDAN RIVER INTO THE NEGEV DESERT FOR IRRIGATION IS GOING AHEAD ON SCHEDULE, DESPITE ARAB OPPOSITION.

IN THE BEIT NETOFA AREA, HUNDREDS OF WORKERS USING AN IMPRESSIVE ARRAY OF MODERN EQUIPMENT ARE ENGAGED IN A RACE AGAINST TIME TO COMPLETE THE EARTHWORK FOR TWO HUGE RESERVOIRS BEFORE THE RAINS SET IN.

THE SMALLEST OF THE TWO RESERVOIRS WILL HOLD ONE-AND-A-HALF-MILLION CUBIC METRES OF WATER. IT WILL BE A SEDIMENTATION POOL, WHERE THE WATER, PUMPED FROM LAKE KINNERET THROUGH THE 25 MILE (38 KILOMETRE) LONG OPEN CHANNEL, WILL BE DIVESTED OF ITS EROSION SEDIMENTS.

THE WATER WILL THEN BE CHANNELLED INTO THE LARGEST RESERVOIR, WHICH WILL HAVE A CAPACITY OF FOUR-AND-A-HALF-MILLION CUBIC METRES. FROM THE SOUTHERN END OF THIS LAKE, THE WATER WILL BE PIPED UNDERGROUND FOR ABOUT ANOTHER 53 MILES (85 KILOMETRES) ON ITS JOURNEY SOUTH.

THE BOTTOM OF THE RESERVOIRS ARE TO BE WATERPROOFED WITH A LAYER OF BASALT EIGHT INCHES (20 CENTIMETRES) THICK. IN ADDITION, A TWO-INCH (5 CENTIMETRE) COATING OF CONCRETE WILL BE SPRAYED ON THE SIDES.

(MEANWHILE, MEMBER STATES OF THE ARAB LEAGUE PLAN TO BEGIN WORK AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ON A SCHEME OF THEIR OWN TO DIVERT THE WATERS OF THE JORDAN RIVER BEFORE T ENTERS ISRAEL. THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT HAS SAID THAT, IF THAT, IF THE ARABS ATTEMPT THIS, ISRAEL WILL ACT TO PREVENT IT.)
