    A marathon hijack flight started Friday night when the hijacker, William Holder, seized a Western Airlines Boeing 727 between Los Angeles and Seattle and forced it to land in San Francisco. The hijacker had demanded and received 500,000 dollars (192,000 sterling) ransom money. He took 40 passengers as hostages from the aircraft and took them into a long-range Boeing 720.

    The airliner then flew to New York where the 40 passengers were released and after refuelling took off for Algiers.

    During the flight Holder clutched a briefcase with a wire attached, which he claimed contained explosives. After Holder end his companion arrived in Algiers it was found that he had no explosives at all.

    SYNOPSIS: A marathon hijack ended in Algiers Saturday when a young black hijacker and his female companion arrived aboard a Boeing 720.

    The aircraft was the second one they used in their hijack that began on a flight between Los Angeles and Seattle in the United States. The hijacker, William Holder, ordered the airliner to San Francisco. He demanded and received 500,000 dollars in ransom and a long-range aircraft to take him on to New York, and then to Algiers.

    Forty hostages he had taken were released in New York. During the flight, Holder clutched a briefcase with a wire attached. He said this was a bomb and the wire was connected to the detonator. In Algiers he explosives were found. The hijack had been carried out on a bluff.
