  • Description

Greeks went to the polls on Sunday (30 March) to vote for mayors and councillors in the first municipal elections since July of 1964.

The elections were the third since November last year when Greaks voted in general elections for a Parliament after seven years of military rule. In December, they voted a Republic.

About six million registered voters over the age of 21 had the right to elect 264 mayors as well as 5,761 heads of smaller communities and their councillors totalling 60,000. Voting was compulsory.

Prime Minister Constantine Karamanlis's Government had urged the people to ignore party politics in Sunday's elections and vote for those they felt would best serve the interests of local government.
