Background: Four people were killed, and about 30 injured, in a train collision near Ospitaletto, between Brescia and Milan, Italy, Dec. 17. One of those injured was Signor Bladini Confalonieri, the Italian Liberal Deputy and President of the Parliamentary assembly of the Western European Union.
The engine of a special train travelling from Milan to Venice apparently lost a wheel and overturned on to an adjoining track. A few second later, an express passenger train coming in the opposite direction - bound for Milan from Trieste - hit the engine.
The driver of the first train was unhurt; and tried to avoid a crash by running towards the other train waving his hat. Rescue parties searched for the dead and injured; and shortly afterwards, an inquiry was opened by the railway authorities.
