  • Description

At a time when Algerian-French relations are on the brink of a cauldron these pictures from the torrid North African country show that many Algerians, at least, have cause to welcome and respect the attentions of French Organisation.

Known to the natives as 'Toubibas', these mobile, military nurses travel the barren and unfriendly countryside of Algiers ministering unto the needs of sick artisans and their children.

With the latest drugs, rugged trucks and their own cheerful dispositions, these mobile nurses are doing much to cement the diplomatic cracks in the structure of present relationships.

This social service is free: indeed, few of the natives could afford to pay for the skilled medical attention -- and education -- they receive.

They can, and do, pay with thanks, however. And that is enough for the volunteer diplomats of the nursing corps.
