  • Description

A regular party political meeting turned into an anti-government demonstration in Seoul on Tuesday (18th December) as members of a minority opposition party marched from their annual convention into the streets of the South Korean capital.

Some 300 members of the Democratic Unification Party, carrying anti-government placards and shouting protests against the "non-democratic" rule of President Park Chung-hee, marched 200 yards (metres) before being stopped by some 100 plainclothes and riot police.

Immediately before their convention had passed a resolution appealing to South Koreans to join the party's "struggle for the restoration of democracy".

In addition to condemning what they termed "the incompetent, corrupt Park government", the resolution also denounced the government's economic dependence on Japan and Japanese capital.

The Democratic Unification Party holds two parliamentary seats out of a total of 219.
