THE NEW DEEP SEA PORT AT LOME, CAPITAL OF TOGO, IS NEARING COMPLETION. IT WILL?

  • Description

THE NEW DEEP SEA PORT AT LOME, CAPITAL OF TOGO, IS NEARING COMPLETION. IT WILL BE OFFICIALLY OPENED ON 26 APRIL, BUT IT'S ALREADY HANDLING TRAFFIC.

THE VITAL NECESSITY FOR TOGO TO HAVE ITS OWN PORT WAS RECOGNISED AT THE TIME OF INDEPENDENCE, AND IN 1962 A LONG-TERM LOAN OF 53 MILLION DEUTSCH MARKS WAS NEGOTIATED WITH THE WEST GERMAN GOVERNMENT.

WORK HAS GONE ON STEADILY SINCE THEN, AND THE FIRST SHIP DOCKED AT THE PORT A FEW MONTHS AGO. NOW FIVE SHIPS CAN BE HANDLED AT ONCE, LOADING AND UNLOADING CARGO DIRECTLY TO THE QUAY.

DIRECT HANDLING OF CARGO MEANS BIG REDUCTION IN COSTS, AND FEWER GOODS ARE DAMAGED. THE NEW PORT ALSO MEANS THAT TOGO WILL BE ABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME TO IMPORT ITS FUEL NEEDS DIRECTLY - AT PRESENT OIL COMES IN VIA LAGOS IN NIGERIA, A ROUTE THAT ADDS MILLIONS OF FRANCS TO THE COST OF OIL PRODUCTS.

IT ALSO MEANS A MUCH BETTER CHANCE FOR THE BURGEONING TOURIST INDUSTRY. THIS WEEK THE 20,000 TON SOVIET LINER TARAS CHEVCHENKO IS IN THE NEW PORT. IT'S UNDER CHARTER, CARRYING A PARTY OF WEST GERMAN TOURISTS.
