  • Description

President Chiang Kai-shek of Nationalist China took the salute of infantry and tank units at a massive annual army review in Southern Formosa, Oct. 9.

The President was accompanied by Service chiefs, Defence Ministry officials, and officers of the U.S. Military Mission as he watched the parade from the reviewing stand.

Thousands of infantrymen stood at attention in pouring rain for their leader's inspection. Behind them, row upon row, were tanks and support vehicles. Then Chiang Kai-shek rode at the head of a motorcade to have a closer look at his troops.

Later he inspected new weapons and watched some of the Army's best marksmen in action.

Communist China held its own massive military review earlier this month with Khruschev as chief guest. While Khruschev continued to preach Peace, the Communist Defence Ministry in Peking maintained its demand of "right to liberate" Formosa and the off-shore islands.

Shortly after, reports said Nationalist 'Commandos' had landed on the mainland to plant the flag of "Free China" in Communist soil; the troops then withdrew.
