Background: The newly elected Corporation of Delhi accorded its first civic reception to the President of India Dr. Rajindra Prasad on 30th April, 1958, after much controversy over the address to be presented to the President. While the Jan Sangh refused to accept the line "Father of Indian Nation" for Mahatma Gandhi, Congress and Communists joined hands to dub it as a communal body and assassin of the Father of the Nation. Retorting, the Jan Sangh part members of the Corporation accused the Communists of being foreign stooges.

The President of India drove in state from the Historic Red Fort escorted by his colourful Body Guards through the "Silver Street" of Moughal Days (Chandni Chowk) and now the nerve centre of Capital's Trade. Passing through the statue of Queen Victoria, the head of which was broken down during 1942 movement, he arrived at the Azad Park where he was received by the first Mayor of Delhi Mrs. Aruna Asaf Ali.

It is interesting to note that Mrs. Asaf Ali was a leading red party leader and an underground worker during British Days. The Congress having failed to get majority in the Corporation, joined Communists to elect her as Mayor.

Dr. Prasad was given presents by the Mayor on behalf of the Corporation and then presented with an address of welcome.

The route through which President passed was gaily decorated with arches and gates.
