Background: The Algerian President, Bendjedid Chadli, spent several days visiting a far-flung town in the east of his country recently. President Chadli, arrived in Oum El-Bouaghi on October 24 with several government officers, to meet local dignitaries and members of the government's administrative division which had recently been re-structured in the town. Cheering crowds greeted the presidential motorcade and the President later walked through the streets. President Chadli also visited several factories in the area and opened a timber processing plant. He also attended the reburial of Algerians whose bodies were recently found in mass graves in and around Khenchela. They were killed during the French presence in the war of independence (ended 1962) and were laid to rest in Oum El-Bouaghi's war cemetery.
