  • Description

ARMY HELICOPTERS WERE CALLED IN TODAY (24 APRIL) TO PATROL WATER AND ELECTRICITY LINES IN NORTHERN IRELAND FOLLOWING THE EARLY-MORNING EXPLOSION WHICH SHATTERED A NEW PIPELINE CARRYING WATER TO THE CAPITAL CITY OF BELFAST. THE DECISION WAS TAKEN AT AN EMERGENCY COMMITTEE MEETING OF THE NORTHERN IRELAND CABINET, AND DETAILS WERE GIVEN IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS BY MR. ROBERT PORTER, THE MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS.

THE EXPLOSION, THE SECOND ACT OF SABOTAGE WITHIN WEEK AGAINST A WATER-MAIN SUPPLYING THE CITY, HAS LEFT BELFAST EXTREMELY SHORT OF WATER, AND WOMEN AND CHILDREN WERE TODAY COLLECTING WATER IN KETTLES AND BUCKETS FROM EMERGENCY SUPPLIES IN THE STREETS.

AS WELL AS THE HELICOPTER PATROLS, MEASURES WERE TAKEN TO STRENGTHEN THE HARD-PRESSED NORTHERN IRELAND POLICE BY CALLING UP SPECIAL CONSTABLES (RESERVE POLICE), TO GUARD AGAINST FURTHER ACTS SABOTAGE.

HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER ROBERT PORTER MADE HIS STATEMENT OUTSIDE STORMBOUND, THE NORTHERN IRELAND PARLIAMENT BUILDING.
