  • Description

A NEW RICE MILL WAS OPENED AT AFIFE, GHANA, ON FRIDAY (9 JUNE) BY MR. ASEM, WHO WAS ACTING ON BEHALF OF MR. J.E. NUNOO, POLICE COMMISSIONER AND MINISTER RESPONSIBLE FOR AGRICULTURE.

RICE IS THE PRINCIPAL CROP CULTIVATED ON THE AFIFE STATE FARM, WHICH COVERS SOME 3,5000 ACRES AND CAN PRODUCE AT HARVEST ABOUT 35,000 BAGS PER ACRE.

THREE OFFICIALS, 155 LABOURERS AND 20 TRACTORS MAKE UP THE WORK FORCE ON THE FARM. FARM MANAGER, MR. E. AGYARE-ABOAGYE, WAS TRAINED AT THE WEST OF SCOTLAND AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE IN FARM MECHANISATION.

MR. ASEM CUT THE TAPE TO DECLARE THE MILL OPEN AND THEN TOLD OFFICIALS AND WORKERS THAT THE MILL WAS INTENDED TO STIMULATE NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE IN AFIFE, BUT THOSE IN THE WHOLE AREA TO GROW MORE RICE. HE SAID THE MAJOR DRAWBACK OF RICE CULTIVATION IN THE AREA WAS THE UNCERTAIN AND SCANTY RAINFALL. THE PROBLEM WAS BEING OVERCOME, MR. ASEM SAID, BY THE PROVISION OF ADEQUATE WATER STORAGE DAMS AND CONTROLLED FLOOD WATER FOR IRRIGATION.

LATER, MR. ASEM, ACCOMPANIED BY EXTENSION OFFICERS, VISITED DENU AND KETA TO INSPECT DEVASTATED COCONUT PLANTATIONS WHICH HAD BEEN ATTACKED BY A DISEASE CALLED CAPE ST. PAUL WILT. MR. ASEM SAID THE GHANA GOVERNMENT HAD PROMISED A SPECIAL PROGRAMME FOR THE DEVASTATED PLANTATIONS.
