  • Description

On Sunday (Feb. 18th) the Turkish community in Cyprus will decide who is to be Vice President of the Island and at the same time President of the Turkish administration. This election follows this week's news that President Makarios has been re-elected unopposed as Head of State.

    M. Rauf Denktash who has been President of the Turkish Communal Chamber, and is the Turkish community negotiator in the inter-community talks, is favourite to win the Vice-Presidential election.

He held his largest campaign meeting so far in Attaturk Square in Nicosia on Sunday (Feb 11) and said that his main theme would be to ensure an honourable position in the Republic of Cyprus and equal citizenship for the Turkish community. He would continue to oppose Encsis (union with Greece) because it was the historical and natural duty of every Turk.

The Vice-President of Cyprus is always a Turkish Cypriot.

SYNOPSIS: The election campaign for the Vice-President in Cyprus was in full swing in Nicosia on Sunday. Turkish Cypriots will vote for their Vice-President next weekend. But the election for President will not take place. President makarios has been returned unopposed.

Attaturk Square was full of enthusiastic supporters for Mr. Rauf Denktash's biggest rally of the campaign. He is clear favourite to beat his only rival, Mr. Ahmet berb???roglu in Sunday's election for the Vice-Presidency. If Mr. Denktash wins, he will also become President of the Turkish administration on the Island.

Mr. Denktash, the Turkish community's negotiator in the inter-community talks, said his main theme would be to ensure an honourable position in the Republic of Cyprus and equal citizenship for the Turkish community.

He added that the obstacle in the way of agreement in the talks was Enosis, union with Greece. They would continue to oppose Enosis. It was the historical and natural duty of every Turk. The talks will resume at the end of February... when the election is over.
