  • Description

Ghana's Third National Trade Fair opened in the capital of Accra on Sunday (1 February) with the theme of "Feed Yourself".

Nearly thirty countries from throughout the world, including the Soviet Union, China, Britain and the United States of America, are participating in the Fair, which is designed to demonstrate the Ghanaian Government's determination to provide sufficient food for the nation's nine million inhabitants.

Thousands of people danced and sang as the Ghanaian Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, cut the red ribbon to signify the opening of the Fair.

Before officially declaring the Fair open, Colonel Acheampong told the crowd that Ghana must not only aim to become self-sufficient in food production, but must also set out to "lay sufficient plans for the salvation of the starving in many a foreign land".

Colonel Acheampong also called for more trade between African countries. He said he hoped that the principles enshrined in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would bring Africa nations closer together in trade.

In keeping with the theme of the Fair many of the exhibits were concerned with agricultural machinery and produce.

Before the opening of the Fair, local Ghanaian chiefs mounted a large "durbar" or tribal gathering at which brightly ornamented dancers performed to the music of traditional African instruments.

SYNOPSIS: Accra, the capital of Ghana, where the Ghanaian Government has organised the nations's Third National Trade Fair.

Before the Fair was officially opened, local Ghanaian chiefs organised a large "Durbar" or tribal gathering.

The thousands of people who had arrived to attend the opening of the Fair, were entertained until the arrival of the Ghanaian Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong. To a loud fanfare Colonel Acheampong officially opened the Fair.

In an earlier speech, Colonel Acheampong called on all the people of Ghana to work towards the theme of the Fair .. "Feed Yourself". The theme was designed to demonstrate the Ghanaian Government[s determination to provide sufficient food for the nations's nine million inhabitants.

The Colonel said that Ghana must not only aim to become self-sufficient in food production, but prepare plans for the salvation of the many starving in foreign lands. He also called for more trade between African States. Colonel Acheampong said inter-African trade had been neglected for far too long by Africa governments.

A special pavilion has been erected at the Fair to house exhibits form African countries. The Colonel said it would be a constant reminder of the need to revitalise trade between African States.

But African countries are not the only nations with exhibits at the Fair. Hungary is one of the East European countries represented at the exhibition. And Britain has a large display at the Fair. The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Frank Mills, said he hoped the display would lead to an increase of trade between the two countries. In keeping with the theme of the Fair many of the exhibits were agricultural machinery, such as this Chinese equipment.
