Background: COLOGNE AND MUNICH, WEST GERMANY

In a West German First Division match on October 6, Cologne drew 1-1 against league champions Stuttgart, with Cologne's Klaus Allofs remaining the Bundesliga's leading scorer by notching up his team's goal. A 17,000-strong crowd turned out in Cologne and watched score in the 56th minute. But Karl Allgoener pulled Stuttgart back into the game by equalising just four minutes later from a free kick.

In Munich the same day, home team Bayern Munich, this season's league leaders, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Waldhof Mannheim. Munich had been unbeaten in six previous games, the best-ever start to a season by a Bundesliga club. After an indecisive first half, Munich's Bernd Duernberger put his team ahead in the 62nd minute. But in less than a quarter of an hour, the champions were down 2-1. A shot from long range by Dieter Schlindwein put Mannheim on level terms in the 67th minute. Eight minutes later, Werner Heck added a second goal to give Mannheim an impressive victory and move them up to third place in the league table.
