Background: From Central America...film of the latest revolution, - the early-morning bloodless coup in the republic of El Salvador which Oct 26 overthrew the regime of President Jose Maria Lemus, a strong anti-communist.

Following the uprising, a civilian and military junta took command, while crowds rushed through the streets of the capital, San Salvador, to the central prison where political prisoners were released.

Heading the junta is Colonel Miguel Castillo. President Lemus, accused by the junta of ruling unconstitutionally, is believed to be in neighbouring Guatemala.

The coup occurred during El Salvador's state of emergency, proclaimed early September following a series of pro-Castro demonstrations which Lemus blamed on international Communism.

The junta claims it will act according to democratic principles. Complete revision of the electoral law is promised, and - as soon as possible- a presidential election in which junta members say they will not stand as candidates.
