  • Description

The attempt to solve the problem of the divided city of Berlin began once again on Wednesday (30 September) when the United States, British and French Ambassadors to Bonn met the Soviet envoy from East Berlin at the Allied Control building in West Berlin.

The talks began in March, but were adjourned in July for two months, during which West Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression pact.

The meeting is the seventh since the start of this series of talks, the first East-West initiative on Berlin in eleven years. Chancellor Willy Brandt has made ratification of his treaty with the Soviet Union dependent on a positive outcome in the Berlin talks.

The main aim of the West is to secure free access to and from isolated West Berlin through 110 miles (176 KMS) of East German territory, and a re-opening of the border wall for West Berliners, unable to visit relatives in the East since 1966.

While the first six series of the top secret talks were devoted to listening to each others' attitude, the new round of talks is expected to concentrate on working out a solution. This process could well take months.
