    Background: EAST GERMAN ATHLETES MADE A GOOD SHOWING IN THE FIRST STAGE OF THE OLYMPIC QUALIFYING TRIALS STAGED IN BERLIN OVER THE WEEKEND TO FIND MEMBERS OF THE ALL-GERMAN TEAM FOR THE TOKYO OLYMPICS.

    AT THE END OF THE SECOND DAY YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) EAST GERMANY HAD FILLED 34 PLACES AND WEST GERMANY 26. THE REST OF THE TEAM ARE DUE TO BE SELECTED FOLLOWING THE BALANCE OF THE TRIALS AT JENA, EAST GERMANY, NEXT WEEKEND.

    THE EAST GERMAN GAINED ALL THREE PLACES IN THE ALL-GERMAN TEAM IN FIVE EVENTS -- MEN'S DISCUS, THE MARATHON, THE 20 AND 50-KILOMETRE WALKS, AND THE WOMEN'S SHOT PUT. EAST GERMANY ALSO WON THE MEN'S 4 BY 100-METRES RELAY IN 39.4-SECONDS -- TWO-TENTHS OF A SECOND OUTSIDE THE PRESENT EUROPEAN RECORD.

    WEST GERMANY'S SUCCESSES WERE EQUALLY CONVINCING IN A NUMBER OF EVENTS, INCLUDING THE MEN'S 400 AND 5000-METRES, IN WHICH WEST GERMANS FILLED ALL THREE TEAM PLACES. OTHER WEST GERMAN VICTORIES WERE RECORDED IN THE MEN'S 100-METRES, THE MEN'S 400-METRES HURDLES, THE WOMEN'S 800-METRES AND THE WOMEN'S LONG JUMP.

    MEN'S 100-METRES RESULT. HEIZ SCHUMANN FIRST IN 10.2 SECONDS; FRITZ OBERSIEBRASSE SECOND IN 10.2 AND THIRD WAS MANFRED KNICKENBERG IN 10.3 SECONDS. ALL ARE FROM WEST GERMANY.

    LONG JUMP FOR WOMEN: HELGA HOFFMAN, (SHOWN ON FILM) CAME FIRST WITH BEST PERFORMANCE OF 6.40-METRES. SHE IS FROM WEST GERMANY.
