  • Description

SOME OF THE WORLD'S LEADING SCIENTISTS ARE MEETING IN NAIROBI TO DISCUSS THE SETTING UP OF AN INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCE RESEARCH INTO TROPICAL INSECTS
MORE THAN THREE-QUARTERS OF THE 33 PEOPLE TAKING PART IN THE CONFERENCE, WHICH STARTED ON MONDAY (6 OCTOBER) AND WILL GO ON UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY (14 OCTOBER), ARE PROFESSORS OR DIRECTORS OF RESEARCH INSTITUTES IN AFRICA, EUROPE, AMERICA, AND ASIA.

IN ADDITION, ATTENDING AS OBSERVERS ARE REPRESENTATIVES OF BENEVOLENT FOUNDATIONS, AFRICAN UNIVERSITIES, AND THE KENYA GOVERNMENT.

THE DESPERATE NEED FOR A RESEARCH INSTITUTE IS HIGHLIGHTED BY THE FACT THAT THE MOST COMMON INSECTICIDE, DDT, HAS BEGUN TO POSE A THREAT TO MAN HIMSELF.

SCIENTISTS NOW BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE NEW WAYS OF TACKLING THE AGE-OLD PROBLEM OF INSECT PESTS -- FOR EXAMPLE, BY BURNING THEIR OWN BIOLOGY AGAINST THEM.
