  • Description

    Funeral ceremonies
were held June 19th for Buddhist monk Thich Quang Duc, who burned himself to
death at a street intersection in Saigon protesting discrimination by the
government of South Viet Nam against Buddhists.

The funeral cortege was led by an automobile bearing an enlarged photograph of
the monk as he was burning to death. The hearse...lavishly decorated with
    flowers...followed.

The South Vietnamese government feared that the funeral would provide the
Communists with an opportunity for anti-government demonstrations so the
Buddhists agreed to limit the number of persons in the funeral procession to
1,000 monks and nuns and 130 other Buddhists.About 5,000 policemen were on hand
to keep the crowds behind barriers at a safe distance from the funeral
    procession.

The body of the martyred monk was taken to a crematorium at a cemetery near
Saigon. His ashes will be divided among the pagodas throughout South Viet Nam.
