  • Description

THE PEACE AND DIGNITY OF A CONFIRMATION SERVICE IN THE CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY, COPENHAGEN, WAS SHATTERED MARCH 25 WHEN MEMBERS OF THE PACIFIST "GROUP 61" ROSE FROM THEIR PLACES IN THE CONGREGATION AND UNFURLED CANVAS BANNERS. IT WAS UNDERSTOOD TO BE THE FIRST DEMONSTRATION IN A DANISH CHURCH SINCE THE REFORMATION FOUR CENTURIES AGO.

AT THE START OF THE SECOND PSALM, THEY SLOWLY WALKED UP TO THE ALTAR AND PAUSED FOR A MOMENT. THEY THEN MARCHED DOWN THE AISLE AND OUT OF THE CATHEDRAL. AS THEY WENT, THEY HANDED OUT LEAFLETS TO PEOPLE IN THE CONGREGATION - INCLUDING FRIENDS AND RELATIVES OF THE 22 CHILDREN THERE TO BE CONFIRMED.

SHOCKED CHURCH OFFICIALS READ THE BANNERS AND TORE DOWN SOME OF THEM. POLICE WERE CALLED - BUT MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATORS, NUMBER IN 35, FLED BEFORE THEY ARRIVED. A FEW THAT REMAINED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING WERE REMOVED BY THE POLICE, WHO LATER HELD A MAN FOR QUESTIONING.

MEMBERS OF "GROUP 61" OPPOSE NUCLEAR TESTS AND REARMAMENT - ESPECIALLY DENMARK'S DECISION TO BUY MACHINE-GUNS FROM THE FAMOUS KRUPP FACTORIES IN WEST GERMANY.
