  • Description

The Israeli press and radio reported in Jerusalem on Wednesday (27 October) that Israel will boycott American-sponsored talks for an interim Suez Canal agreement unless Washington agrees to supply it with the Phantom warplanes it has long been seeking. Israel has taken strong exception to the six points outlined by U.S. Secretary of State Rogers to the United Nations a month ago, on the grounds that they support the Egyptian demands for a troop crossing of the waterway and endorse the idea of a limited ceasefire only.

The reports followed a strong statement by Prime Minister Golda Meir on Tuesday (26 October) at the opening of the 7th Knesset, or Parliament, in Jerusalem. In her opening address, she rejected any political concessions that might endanger Israel's security -- even at the price of forfeiting the Phantom-bombers.

SYNOPSIS: At Israel's parliament in Jerusalem, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Golda Meir made the opening statement at the Seventh Knesset. Her remarks preceded Israeli press and radio reports that Israel will boycott American-sponsored talks for an interim Suez Canal agreement, unless Washington agrees to supply it with the Phantom warplanes it has been seeking.

In a strong statement, Mr. Meir rejected any political concessions that might endanger Israel's security. She said that the issue of supplying Israel's vital security needs must to be conditioned by other matters--possibly an implication that she felt the U.S. was withholding the Phantom bombers as a means of political pressure to soften Israel's terms for an agreement to re-open the canal. Israel has taken strong exception to the six points put forth by the United States on the ground that they support the Egyptian demands for a troop crossing of the waterway and endorse the idea of a limited ceasefire only.
