    French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing finalised details of a French-Egyptian agreement to cooperate in establishing a military industry in Egypt, when he met with President Anwar Sadat in Cairo on Sunday (14 December).

    The meeting and finalisation of the agreement came at the end of President Giscard D'Estaing's five day visit to Egypt.

    The visit, the first ever by a French Head of State gave France a head start in the race for a share of the lucrative Egyptian arms market.

    Britain and France and competing for roles in the 8,000 million dollar U.S. (3,1000 million pounds sterling) military industry programme which is being financially backed by Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

    Although a communique issued from Cairo did not precisely outline the French involvement in the project, French officials accompanying the President have said that France will grant Egypt licences for the production of combat aircraft and missiles.

    President Giscard D'Estaing's visit has done much toward strengthening French-Egyptian relations. Apart from numerous rounds of talks, the French leader has spent time visiting Egypt's major industrial centres, tourist spots and universities.

    At Cairo University he was warmly received by staff and students and presented with a commemorative plaque by a student representative.

    SYNOPSIS: The Kubbeh Palace in Cairo was the scene of the last round of talks between French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing and his Egyptian counterpart Answar Sadat on Sunday, before the French leader ???ound up for his five-day visit to Egypt.

    Details of French involvement in the 3,000 million pound project haven't been precisely outlined, but French sources say Egypt will be granted licences to produce French combat aircraft and missiles.

    President Giscard D'Estaing's visit has done much to strengthen his country's relations with Egypt. Apart from numerous meeting with top Egyptian officials the French leader has taken time off to sight-see and visit universities. At Cairo University he ??? received by both staff and students.

    He was presented with a commemorative plague by a student representative. In a speech to mark the agreement, president Sadat described President Giscar D'Estaing as "our good friend".
