  • Description

LISBON, NOV. 5, REUTER -- AT LEAST 36 PEOPLE WERE STILL IN HOSPITAL TODAY AFTER A THREE-HOUR RIOT ??? LAST NIGHT IN WHICH POLICE OPENED FIRE TO BREAK UP LEFT-WING DEMONSTRATORS.

BULLET-MARKS SCARRED THE WALLS OF BUILDINGS IN THE SQUARE WHERE SEVERAL HUNDRED LEFT-WINGERS TRIED TO STORM A THEATER WHERE THE CENTRE DEMOCRAT (C.D.S) PARTY WAS HOLDING ITS FIRST BIG MEETING.

POLICE SAID THEY FIRED ABOVE THE HEADS OF THE DEMONSTRATORS, SOME OF WHOM SHOT BACK. IRON BARS, CLUBS AND BYICYCLE CHAINS LITTERED THE STREETS AFTER THE FIGHTING.

A BURNT-OUT MABULANCEAMBULANCE LAY OVERTURNED ON THE STREET NEXT TO A POLICE CAR WITH ITS WINDOWS SHATTERED. PLATE-GLASS WINDOWS OF A BANK, A BOOK-SHOP AND A CAFE WERE SMASHED.

HOSPITAL SOURCES SAID 18 OF THE 36 PEOPLE STILL IN HOSPITAL THIS MORNING WERE POLICE. SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE BEING TREATED FOR BULLET WOUNDS, BUT ABOUT HALF THE INJURED WERE BEING KEPT ONLY FOR OBSERVATION, THE SOURCES SAID.

AMONG THOSE HURT WAS SENHOR JOSE LUIS SALDANHA SANCHES, EDITOR OF AN EXTREME LEFT-WING NEWSPAPER WHO WAS RELEASED AFTER THREE MONTHS UNDER ARREST ONLY A MONTH AGO.

THE NEWSPAPER, LUTA POPULAR, IS THE MOUTHPIECE OF THE REORGANISING MOVEMENT OF HT EPROLETARIAT PARTY (MRPP), WHICH ISSUED A COMMUNIQUE YESTERDAY CONDEMNING THE C.D.S. MEETING AS A COTUTER-REVOLUTIONARY PROVOCATION.

TROOPS OF THE SPECIAL +COPCON+ SECURITY COMMAND TODAY GUARDED THE OFFICES OF THE C.D.S., A CENTRE-RIGHT PARTY, WHICH WERE INVADED AND BADLY DAMAGED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS.

THE PIOT WAS EMBARRASSING FOR THE PORTUGUESE ARMED FORCES MOVEMENT, WHICH STAGED LAST APRIL'S COUP ENDING 48 YEARS OF TOTALITARIAN RULE AND IS NOW TRYING TO SHOW THAT DEMOCRATIC PROCESSES ARE BEING CARRIED ON PEACEFULLY AND NORMALLY.

THE C.D.S. IS ONE OF THE STRONGEST OF THE EMERGING POLITICAL PARTIES OUTSIDE THE LEFT-DOMINATED PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT. THE PARTIES ARE DUE TO CONTEST GENERAL ELECTIONS NEXT MARCH.

THERE WAS NO IMMEDIATE COMMENT ON THE INCIDENT BY THE GOVERNMENT OR ANY OF THE OTHER PARTIES.
