  • Description

United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, had discussions with Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir, at her residence in Jerusalem on Thursday (May 2) in an attempt to obtain a disengagement of forces with Syria.

About a hundred young people from the Likud opposition party demonstrated outside with placards warning against concessions.

U.S. State Department spokesman Robert McCloskey described the talks as characteristically friendly and said they touched on 'all elements of a possible disengagement'. These elements include a territorial boundary line, a possible United Nations role, and an exchange of prisoners of war. Mr. McCloskey emphasised that Dr. Kissinger did not at this stage have a concrete plan for disengagement.

Mr. McCloskey also said that they discussed the fighting on the Golan Heights which has reached a new intensity since Dr. Kissinger arrived in the Middle East.

In the evening, Dr. Kissinger attended a working dinner with leading Israeli politicians at the residence of Foreign Minister, Mr. Abba Eban. He also had a meeting with Defence Minster, Mr. Moshe Dayan.

Dr. Kissinger flew to Syria on Friday (May 3) for talks with President Assad. He is to return to Israel on Sunday -- two days earlier than originally planned -- with Syrian reactions to the Israeli proposals.
