  • Description

A total of 142 cars set out from ten different points in Europe and North Africa yesterday in this year's Monte Carlo Rally. Thirty vehicles began the long tough journey from Athens with drivers like Harry Kallstrom and Sino Lampinen of the Lancia team among the favourites.

This year four new starting points have been added to the list. They include one in the U.K. and another in North Africa. Among the entrants is Andrew Cowan, winner of the gruelling London to Sydney Marathon.

The Greek entrants set out just after one o'clock in the morning local time. Their route takes them through Northern Greece and into Yugoslavia before the run to Monte Carlo.

This year's rally, the 40th, promises to be one of the most testing. Europe's severe winter has made the high mountain passes in the French Alps thick with snow and dangerously icy.
