Gunmen shot a shopkeeper deed in belfast on Thursday (20 July), while rioting broke out in the city's main jail and mystery snipers opened fire on the rebellious prisoners.

The dead man, a Protestant news agent, was killed when he tried to stop gunmen form planting a bomb in his shop. His wife, who went to his aid, was injured in the shooting but managed to get out before bomb went off.

At the Crumlin Road Jail, prisoners reportedly protesting that political doughtiness held in connection with the troubles in Northern Ireland were moved into their wing of the prison, started two fires. Then about eight of them broke out onto the prison roof and began smashing tiles with wooden clubs. British army troops surrounded the jail and brought the rioting under control.

But the prisoners stayed on the roof until shots were fired at them int he early evening, injuring one of the men. Police said they did not know who had fired the shots.

Elsewhere in the Province, bomb blasts caused extensive damage in the towns of Newry and Randallstown, while in Londonderry the British army claimed to have hit one gunman and possibly three more during a two-hour battle.
