  • Description

Violence over racial segregation of Negroes broke out again on Sunday (7 July) at an amusement park in Baltimore, Maryland (35 miles north of Washington, D.C.).

Fighting broke out when Negroes tried again as they had on 4 July to enter the Gwynn Oak Amusement Park, which is privately owned.Police used dogs to break up picketing.

By the time police brought things under control, 95 white and Negro demonstrators were arrested, as well as four white segregationist hecklers.Among those arrested were 13 Christian and Jewish clergymen.

One woman demonstrator suffered a cut face after being hit by a brick.A professor at nearby Johns Hopkins University, his wife and three sons, the youngest 5 months old, also were arrested when they protested segregation in the park.A second professor, his wife, and six-month-old daughter, also were arrested.

There were several battles. One occurred when a group of demonstrators tried to infiltrate the park by waiting across a stream. The second happened when two Negro maids, employees of the park, entered a women's rest room. Both groups were attacked by a crowd of white segregationist hecklers.

About 150 demonstrators picketed the park entrance to protest segregation.White segregationists staged a counter-picketing demonstration nearby.

When police arrested the integrationist pickets, about 1,500 whites stood on the sidelines jeering arrests.
