    CHINESE FAMILIES IN HONG KONG HAVE BEEN CELEBRATING CHENG MENG, THE CHINESE ALL SOULS' DAY, AT A CEMETERY AT SANDY RIDGE, NEAR THE BORDER WHICH SEPARATES THE COLONY FORM THE People'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. ON WEDNESDAY, RESTRICTIONS IN THE AREA WERE LIFTED TO ENABLE THEM TO VISIT THE AREA.

    CHENG MENG IS CHINESE FOR ALL SOULS' DAY. IT IS A NON-CHRISTIAN FESTIVAL WHICH LASTS FOR ONE MONTH AND IS BEING HELD THIS YEAR IN APRIL. IN SPITE OF THE LIFTING OF RESTRICTIONS FOR IT ON WEDNESDAY, BORDER GUARDS KEPT A CLOSE WATCH ON ACTIVITIES IN THE SANDY RIDGE CEMETERY, WHICH LIES NEAR THE RAILWAY STATION AT THE BORDER KNOWN AS CHECKPOINT CHARLIE.

    RELATIVES ARE ALLOWED TO VISIT THIS CEMETERY ONLY ONCE A YEAR, AND THEY MAKE THE MOST OF IT. EPITAPHS ARE GIVE A NEW COAT OF PAINT AND GRAVES ARE WEEDED. OFFERINGS OF COOKED FOOD ARE PLACED ON THE GRAVIES, AND BUNDLES OF MONEY MADE FORM JOSS PAPER ARE BURNED. AT THE END OF THE DAY, FIRECRACKERS ARE EXPLODED TO DRIVE AWAY EVIL SPIRITS.
