REPORTER: "Where have you come from today?"



BHIKU RADIA: "From Kampala - Entabbe."



REPORTER: "And where are you going to?"



RADIA: "I'm going to Bombay now."



REPORTER: "And what sort of passport do you carry?"



RADIA: "Issued in London, a British passport."



REPORTER: "A British passport."



RADIA: "Issued in London."



REPORTER: "Did you have much difficulty getting out of Kampala?"



RADIA: "Too much. I never forget it in my life, I tell you."



REPORTER: "What happened to you?"



RADIA: "Well, actually they check my luggage completely, strip it completely. All my ornaments (indistinct) were taken back. I had to return them to my nephew."



REPORTER: "Did they give you a personal search?"



RADIA: "Yes, too much actually. And there was no money allowed to be taken out. I had a hundred shillings in my pocket. I thought it was the lot that was allowed, but then they said 'you can't take anything.' So I am now penniless, completely."



REPORTER: "Was it difficult for you leaving Kampala?"



MRS. USHA RADIA: "Of course".



REPORTER: "Why was it difficult?"



MRS. RADIA: "I was born here."



REPORTER: "But, I mean did they make a lot of difficulties when you were leaving?"



MRS. RADIA: "Yes. All of our things - they took all of the things (indistinct).



REPORTER: "Everything?"



MRS. RADIA: "Everything."



REPORTER: "They took it away?"



MRS. RADIA: "Yes."



REPORTER: "And your money?"



MRS. RADIA: "Even money. We don't even have five cents in our pockets."



REPORTER: "And what about the baggage?"



MRS. RADIA: "Even that they get. With us, we have only clothes with us, nothing else."

Background: Asians leaving Uganda have complained of rigorous searches by customs officers at Entebbe Airport on the way out.

Some say all their Ugandan money was confiscated and they had to leave penniless. Jewellery, watches and other personal goods were also confiscated.

Others have said they were forced to strip to be searched and one young man reaching Britain, claimed that his hair was forcibly cut with broken glass.

A party of Ugandan Asians who passed through Nairobi Airport in Kenya on Thursday (31 August) bound for India told reporters of the treatment they received as they left Uganda.
