  • Description

THE WORLD'S SMALLEST UNDERGROUND RAILWAY SYSTEM -- BUT CERTAINLY ONE OF THE MOST MODERN -- WILL START TO OPERATE IN ROTTERDAM EARLY NEXT MONTH.

ON THE 9 FEBRUARY, IT WILL BE OFFICIALLY OPENED BY CROWN PRINCESS BEATRIX OF THE NETHERLANDS AND HER HUSBAND, CLAUS VON AMSBERG. IT IS A GREAT FEAT OF ENGINEERING: BUILT OVER SEVEN YEARS AT A COST OF OVER 23 MILLION POUNDS, IT DIPS UNDER THE RIVER MAAS TO A DEPTH OF 53 FT (16.2 M), 20 FT (6.1M) BELOW THE RIVER BED, THEN RISES TO THE SURFACE TO SOAR TO ITS DESTINATION ALONG A VIADUCT HIGH ABOVE THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE CITY.

THE NEW ROTTERDAM METRO WAS BUILT TO RELIEVE THE CITY'S MOUNTING TRAFFIC CHAOS. THE EXISTING ROAD AND RAIL BRIDGES AND ROAD TONNEL UNDER THE MAAS PROVED INADEQUATE FOR PRESENT-DAY NEEDS.

WHEN COMMUTERS CAN JOURNEY ACROSS THE HEART OF THE CITY IN 12 MINUTES UNDERGROUND, ON TRAINS WHICH WILL RUN AT TWO-AND-A-HALF MINUTE INTERVALS, THEY WILL -- IT IS HOPED -- PREFER THIS TO THE LONG TREK IN THEIR CARS, WHICH CAN TAKE 90 MINUTES IN THE RUSH HOUR TO COVER THE SAME DISTANCE.
