  • Description

The Foreign Minister of Ivory Coast, Monsieur Arcane Usher, warned on Wednesday (4 October) of the "grave consequence" which would inevitably follow, he said, the failure of current contacts between United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim and South Africa over the future of South-West Africa.

Addressing the General Assembly in French, he said these contacts, authorised under a Security Council resolution adopted in February, were a new approach to the problem of the territory which South Africa continued to rule in deviance of U.N. resolutions.

    M. Usher said the success of the undertaking 'would finally permit a glimpse of an era of fraternity and understanding between white and black Africans.'
But he stressed that South Africa would have to abandon the idea of dividing up the territory -- known at the U.N. as Namibia -- into small African homelands.

The sound includes his French speech - a transcript of which is provided below:-
