  • Description

Chanting, banner--carrying communist demonstrators marched through the streets of Paris, France, on Saturday (September 6) in protest at the presence of former Portuguese President Antonio Spinola. The demonstration centred outside the Sheraton Hotel where Senor Spinola arrived on Wednesday (3 September) for a week's stay. He's been in exile in Brazil since the abortive Portuguese coup on March 11 in which he called for the outing of the left-wing regime there.

Following he arrival, Sr. spinola went into hiding in the Sheraton, where he was booked in under an assumed name. When his identity was discovered, the reused to make any comments other than a brief statement, issued through the hotel management, in which he said his visit was purely private and non-political.

Meanwhile, in Portugal itself the crisis sharpened on Saturday (6 September) when the government resigned. It was expected to take some days before a new government was formed in a fresh attempt to solve the country's constitutional difficulties in the struggle between left-wing and moderate factions.
