  • Description

At The Hague, Netherlands, on Monday (21 May), Australia's Attorney-General, Lionel Murphy, told the International Court of Justice that "every man, woman, child and foetus in Australia have in his or her body radio-active material from the French as well as other atmospheric tests."
Mr. Murphy was speaking on behalf of his country, which, together with New Zealand, is seeking an order from the Court to stop French tests in the South Pacific until final judgement of the dispute by the international body.

France is boycotting these proceedings, and has said it will take no notice of the Court's judgment.

In a lengthy statement to 16 International judges, Mr. Murphy said that when France exploded her bombs in the atmosphere over Mururoa Atoll "she explodes them in a real sense over Australia and other nations and peoples of the southern hemisphere."
The Australian Attorney-General said one of his country's legal propositions was that the deposit of radio-active fallout from nuclear tests infringed the inviolability of Australian territorial sovereignty.
