INTRODUCTION Work has started on clearing and rebuilding several towns near Isfara in Tadjikistan (Central Asia) in the Soviet Union Following a severe earthquake nearly two weeks ago.

The epicentre of the earthquake on 31 January was the township of Oftobru, about 12 kilometres (7 miles) south of Isfara. Isfara itself suffered no major damage in the tremor, which registered Force Eight on the 12-point Soviet earthquake scale. About 3,000 tremors are felt in and around Isfara every year, but this was the first in living memory to occur during winter. It came after three days of continuous snow and caused severe damage to several mountain villages including Oftobru.

Soviet officials said about 6,000 people were left homeless by the disaster. A government commission decided that badly damaged houses would be pulled down and that homes would be provided free for all families affected by the earthquake. Blankets, warm clothing and food were issued to the homeless. There have been no reports of casualties so far.

Works has started on repairing the damage, and building machinery and materials are flowing in from many areas of the Tadjikistan Republic. A large tent city has been set up for the homeless who had been accommodated in hotels and a sanitarium and private homes in Isfara.
