  • Description

A THREE-MEMBER UNITED NATIONS BORDER MISSION TO CAMBODIA AND SOUTH VIETNAM, TO SEEK WAYS OF REDUCING BORDER TENSIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES, ARRIVED IN SAIGON ON JULY 5 AFTER INSPECTING THE CAMBODIAN BORDER.

THE MISSION MEMBERS ARE: MR. PIO CORREA, BRAZILIAN AMBASSADOR TO MEXICO, MR. MOISE AKA, ADVISOR TO THE IVORY COAST DELEGATION AT THE UNITED NATIONS AND MR. DEY OULD SIDI BABA, MOROCCO DEPUTY REPRESENTATIVE IN THE UNITED NATIONS.

THE MISSION WAS DESPATCHED TO THE AREA FOLLOWING DESTRUCTION OF CAMBODIAN VILLAGES BY AMERICAN-ADVISED VIETNAMESE FORCES HUNTING FOR COMMUNIST VIET CONG TROOPS, WHOM SOUTH VIETNAM CLAIMS CAMBODIA WAS PROVIDING SANTUARY.

AFTER CAMBODIAN COMPLAINTS, THE UNITED NATIONS SENT THE MISSION TO THE TWO COUNTRIES, IN ORDER TO CONSIDER MEASURES AS MAY BE NECESSARY TO PREVENT A RECURRENCE OF SUCH INCIDENTS. AT THE END OF THEIR INVESTIGATIONS, THE MISSION WILL REPORT THEIR FINDINGS TO THE UNITED NATIONS COUNCIL.

SPEAKING TO REPORTERS, MR. DEY OULD SIDI BABA SAID HE BELIEVED BOTH SIDES HAD THE WILL TOWARDS A REAL PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF THE BORDER QUESTION.
