Background: Large crowds Sept 4 gathered along both sides of the Grand Canal, Venice, for the annual Venice Regatta - one of the most striking spectacles in this notably spectacular city. Not only Venetians were there but also large numbers of tourists.

First there was the historical procession of richly draped Venetian vessels - recalling the glories of the Republic of Venice, known in Italy as "La Serenissima" because of its wealth and splendour. One of the ships, even more magnificently caparisoned than the rest, represents the "Bucintoro" - the golden vessel used by the Doge for ceremonial occasions.

Then, over the same course along the Grand Canal and under the Ponte del Rialto, came the traditional race for 2-oared gondolas. The 4-mile rowing contest for Venice's "gondolieri" is claimed as the world's oldest rowing race.

The Festival is said to have its origin in the defeat of pirates who raided Venice in the year 942. Races for gondoliers were later added to the existing annual celebration in 1315.
