    THE INDIAN PRESIDENT, MR. V.V. GIRI MADE AN UNPRECEDENTED APPEARANCE IN THE SUPREME COURT IN NEW DELHI YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO DENY THAT HIS SUPPORTERS HAD BRIBED PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR HIM. HE TOLD THE COURT THAT THE CHARGE WAS ABSOLUTELY FALSE.

    IT WAS THE FIRST TIME AN INDIAN PRESIDENT HAS EVER APPEARED IN A LAW COURT AND MR GIRI IS BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY HEAD OF STATE IN RECENT TIMES TO APPEAR BEFORE A COURT TO ANSWER ALLEGATIONS WHILE IN OFFICE.

    THE COURTROOM WAS FILLED TO CAPACITY FOR THE HEARING OF TWO PETITIONS CHALLENGING HIS ELECTION TO OFFICE LAST YEAR WHICH HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED BY OPPOSITION MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT. THE PETITIONS ALLEGE THAT 75 YEAR OLD MR GIRI INDULGED IN CORRUPT PRACTICES AND BRIBERY AND USED UNDUE INFLUENCE DURING THE ELECTION CAMPAIGN.

    MR GIRI DENIED THAT HE HAD CAST ASPERSIONS ON THE CHARACTER OF HIS OPPONENT, MR REEDY, OR THAT HE HAD DESCRIBED HIMSELF AS PRIME MINISTER GANDHI'S CANDIDATE. HE SAID THAT HE STOOD AS AN INDEPENDENT.

    THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS LAST AUGUST WERE THE MOST BITTERLY FOUGHT IN THE HISTORY OF INDIA AND RESULTED IN A SPLIT IN THE CONGRESS PARTY.

    MR GIRI WON THE ELECTION AFTER A DRAMATIC RECOUNT BY NEARLY 15 THOUSAND VOTES.
