  • Description

The face of Uganda's capital has changed dramatically in the last few days as the Ugandan Government prepared for the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit meeting which began on Friday (25 July).

Millions of pounds have been spent to spruce up Kampala in readiness for the influx of delegates from the 46 member nations. Special shirts and posters were printed for the occasion. Shop and hotel fronts have been decked out with colourful banners.

The face to be seen everywhere is that of President Field Marshall Idi Amin. It appears on tee-shirts, banners, shop windows. The most recent evidence of Amin influence is a larger-than-life status of the President which he himself unveiled this week.

The OAU's preparatory ministerial meeting got underway on Friday as a forerunner of the Heads of State summit which begins on Monday (28 July).

The meeting's main topic was consideration of tough measures to be taken against Israel as part of Afro-Arab solidarity. The ministers agreed to demand the forfeiture of Israel's United Nations seat. They have not yet decided whether this should be permanent or temporary.
