Background: King Hussein of Jordan inaugurated the GBP4,000,000 Jordan Oil Refinery at Zarqa (about 15 miles north of the capital, Amman) Feb 2. Built by the Italian firm of Snamporjeti, it is expected to produce 330,000 tons of oil a year.
Before unveiling a stone to mark the royal inauguration, the Kings inspected a guard of honour. And when the ceremony was over, he was shown round the new refinery.
Jordan's other natural resources include phosphate deposits, marble, potash and other mineral salts in the Dead Sea, and fisheries at Aqaba on the Red Sea. And although the country produces a varied selection of light consumer goods, the main sources of national income are agriculture and tourism, according to official statistics.
